Making AI Sound Human: Why People Are Turning to “Un-AI” Tools for Their Writing

AI is getting cheap. Human understanding isn’t.

here’s the thing: I’ve been thinking about this a lot while building out the AIHumanity site.

The “hard” part of AI is sliding into commodity territory. Models, agents, auto-generated content__you can ship something that technically works in a weekend.

What still feels rare is getting it to feel right to real people.
Tone. Trust. Emotional context. The stuff that decides whether anyone comes back a second time.

What I’m seeing (and why I care)

1) People can feel “too perfect” writing.
The rise of “un-AI your writing” tools is a loud signal. If AI text already landed emotionally, nobody would pay for a layer whose whole job is to add warmth, intent, and small imperfections. The demand isn’t “more correct.” It’s “more human.”

2) Humanized AI is becoming an intentional product strategy.
Amazon’s “humorphism” direction—and agents like Connect Talent and Connect Decisions—points to the same shift: not just automation, but AI designed to fit human workflows and earn trust. Candidates may know they’re interacting with AI, but the interaction still has to feel natural. To me, that’s not a benchmark problem. That’s a human one.

3) When the stakes are emotional, the human factor becomes the product.
The moment communication touches confidence, vulnerability, or relationships, “good enough” language stops being good enough. Emotion-aware systems can smooth interactions by reading behavioral cues, but nuance and empathy are still the sharp edge.

The tradeoff I don’t think we can ignore

AI creation is getting cheaper by the month.
Human understanding__empathy, context, judgment, trust__is still precious.

If you optimize only for speed and output, you get writing that’s clean but sterile, and agents that function but don’t connect. Look, I’ve seen how easy it is to generate more. What’s hard is generating care.

Takeaway

what this tells me: the future of AI development isn’t “more AI.”

It’s AI built with human understanding—systems that communicate with tone, respect emotional context, and adapt to how people actually work and decide.

That’s the bet I’m making with AIHumanity: humanize AI, and protect AI humanity.
